Ryan Kerrigan retires after 11 seasons in NFL
“It has been an honor to play for the Washington Redskins for the past 11 seasons,” Kerrigan wrote in a statement released by the team. “I will always appreciate the lifelong friendships I have developed with my teammates and coaches as we shared some of our fondest memories.
I would like to give a very special thanks to Mr. Snyder, Bruce Allen, and all of our fans who have supported me over my career.
I have had the honor to play for two outstanding head coaches and I am blessed to have played alongside some great defensive linemen.
I would not be where I am today without the support of my family, and I want to thank them for their continued support.”
Kerrigan, 31, has spent his entire NFL career in Washington after being drafted by the Redskins with the No. 16 overall pick in 2011 out of Purdue. He has not missed a game since his rookie season.
In his time with the Redskins, he has been named to five Pro Bowls, was a First-Team All-Pro in 2014 and Second-Team All-Pro in 2013, tallied 35 sacks, forced 16 fumbles, and recovered four others while playing in all but two games. He set a franchise record with nine sacks in 2013 and was the first Redskins linebacker to be named Defensive Player of the Year by the Associated Press. That same season he was a First-Team All-Pro selection by The Sporting News and PFF.
His last sack came earlier this season as he helped lead Washington to a Week 7 victory over Buffalo on Oct.
