The Morning After: January 29, 2009

By mizerle06

Since it is Super Bowl week and we’re only three days away, maybe we should talk about it a bit? I was not in the least bit interested in either team when the conference championships were decided a couple of Sundays ago. I have no love or hate for either Pittsburgh or Arizona. I understand that there are compelling storylines for fans of each though: potential “one for the other hand” for ‘Burgh, a first Super Bowl appearance for ‘Zona, etc. I’m mostly just hoping for a good, entertaining football game. By the way, when are we gonna get back to a relevant halftime performer?

Anywho, here’s some good, and serious, Super Bowl stories. They start with some Matt Leinart and finish up with several small stories about various players…solid read.

A little more from the Big Game…Super Bowl athletes – separated at birth. (h/t to esteemed S&F commenter john)

And, some more…just not from this year’s SB. NY Giants Super Bowl rings were recovered after having been stolen.

Skiier Daniel Albrecht had some pretty gnarly injuries and is in a coma. He’ll have to remain in it until his lungs heal.

Pat Summitt is going for win #999 tonight in Knoxville against Mississippi and #1000 Monday night in at Oklahoma…no other college basketball coach is even close.

Apparently, Primetime knows that Donovan wants out of Philly.

If you guys are anything like me, you love the big hits in football. I remember yelling at the tv during the BCS CG when the Florida defensive back laid out the Oklahoma receiver. Well, unfortunately although they are entertaining, those hits take a toll, especially on the older guys who wore infinitely supbar equipment in relation to today’s football equipment. Hopefully, studies like these will help team doctors and trainers understand the ramifications of rushing a player back into the game.

One of the top rated high school QB recruits has committed to Tennessee West Virginia Clemson.

I’m sure a lot, if not all, of you have heard about Joe Torre’s new book. Here’s an excerpt covering his final day with Yanks. Pretty good read.

The Feds are still at it with Barry Bonds and Greg Anderson. This time, they’re trying to force Anderson’s hand with a raid on his mother-in-law’s house.

Excellent news for everyone in the ACC not nicknamed the Seminoles – Bobby Bowden has signed for one more year with FSU.

Our friends at TotalProSports.com have put together some pretty solid stuff the last few days. They got their hands on some excellent shots of USC kicker David Buehler partying like he’s Matt Leinart, posted video of Ovechkin Gus Frerotte-ing the boards, and developed a very solid first two rounds of a mock NFL Draft.

Monday, we told you a bit about Ronald Steele deciding to abruptly end his career at Bammer. Looks like there was a lot more to the story because, just a doy or so later, coach Mark Gottfried resigned. Actually, he didn’t resign. This is what I like to refer to as “he got resigned” because there are few jobs where the worker can willingly resign, and then get paid. Dude’s gonna get $2 large to leave…sounds like a buyout to me.

We’re down to t-minus 17 days until the first green flag! Let’s talk about the state of NASCAR.

Speaking of the Charlotte Bobcats, Gerald Wallace was checked for a collapsed lung after Andrew Bynum’s flagrant foul.

Congratulations Pats fans! Tommy boy is looking to be back for opening day. I hope Matt Cassell hasn’t forgotten how to ride the pine!

I guess ol’ Al Davis didn’t like my resume. I must have been overqualified but that’s netiher here nor there. Word on the street is that the Radiers got themselves a coach and will remove the interim tag from Tom Cable’s title. Is the hire uninspiring?

Men’s college roundball had some exciting games last night:
- For the third straight week, seems like nobody wants to be #1. This time, Wake Forest dethroned Duke.
- Tyler Hansbrough’s 55 game streak of double-doubles came to an end last night and UNC barely excaped Tallahassee with a win, needing a running 3-pointer as time expired from Ty Lawson.
- Pitt decided they didn’t want to be #3 too and took care to guarantee a drop in the ranking with their lost to Villanova.
- After a 37 game home win streak, Tennessee has lost 3 of their last 4 in Knoxville including last night’s loss to LSEAUX. Florida, and GameDay, visit Knoxville this Saturday. Marissa Miller was there to see the game.

Don’t eat the nuts!

Cello scrotum and guitar nipple…’nough said.

Moonshiner gets some hard time…he never would have been caught if he’d been driving the General Lee.

David Cameron has my vote for British PM.

(GITC Note: Federer defeated Roddick 6-2, 7-5, 7-5 overnight in the Aussie Open setting up a Nadal vs. Federer assuming Nadal can take out #14 seed Fernando Verdasco tomorrow.)

I like how Pat Summitt’s record is 998-186 but Morgan Wooten was 1274-192. To match that she’d have to go 276-6 from here on out to match that mark.

I’ll never forget the first game at the Comcast Center was the Jordan Capitol Classic (the 3rd of the three national high school basketball all star games) in 2002 because I was there. Sitting in the row in front of me were three old guys. It wasn’t until I walked down closer to the court that I looked back and saw who they were. It was Red Auerbach (84), John Wooden (91), and Morgan Wooten (70) all sitting together. I went back and quickly said that I admired all three of them greatly and just wanted a hand shake.

    Each shook my hand.

The greatest coaches of all three levels. The weird thing was that it was about a month after Wooten retired and I could almost see his eyes screaming that he is now grouped with these two old retired guys and how that made him feel.

Only Red has left us, but the other two are clinging to life after close calls. I hope they can pass on the knowledge they have before they pass on.  (Quote)

don’t lie, gitc; did this happen when you realized who they were?  (Quote)

Any chance we can play the Super Bowl tomorrow? I’m sick of the hype.  (Quote)

I think we should make the Super Bowl a best of 3 or 5. Just play a game every other day for the entire week.  (Quote)

The sub-plot that gets no mention in this build-up is the Rooney Rule. When The Chin retired, everyone expected Wisenhut to get the job – but Rooney had to follow his own rule and interview someone else. Tomlin blew him away in the interview and got the job, so Wisenhut left for Arizona. This is a game of the better interviewer against the spurned coach — all because of the fabulous Rooney Rule.  (Quote)

  • guyinthecorner says:

Some rumors said that the reason that Wisenhunt was turned down was that Big Ben didn’t get along with him.  (Quote)

  • john says:

If Tomlin didn’t get the job, Rooney was going to go with Russ Grimm, not Whisenhunt.  (Quote)

  • gatortrey says:

Is it really that much of a story though? Not really.

The problem with this Super Bowl that that they are trying to find stories.

Arizona was a very mediocore and underappreciated team most the season, that stepped it up in the playoffs…but it doesn’t have that Mason or ‘85 Nova or even this past seasons Devil Rays type feel.

The Steelers are a great organization, and thats it. No one controversal, no one outlandish, and no figure that transcends the sports media.

For all we know this could be a great game, but I have a feeling the numbers are going to be bad for Super Bowl standard.  (Quote)
