The Morning After: January 24, 2009

By mikeychx

tma-weekendGeeze Louise…it’s Saturday morning and the sports world has been shrunk to a size so small, it will actually fit in the palm of my hand. Of course we all know this isnt true…but after watching Lost on the Tivo – I am gonna be a little weird ya know.

Any hoo – it is going to be a slow day around here I get the feeling. Why? Becuase there is college basketball only today for your viewing pleasure. Again…not really.

Its just that what ever is happening has affected Major League Jerk….and now it is affecting me. Its 1am in the east so if MLJ is restored I get to look like an ass – but if not…I dont understand why anyone would mess with original Coke to make New Coke…but – it happens.

Everything is so weird that Head Coaches are becoming Coordinators in the NFL…and not just the ones who were not good head coaches to begin with.

Most of you may or may not know this, but I write  Saturday’s The Morning After on Friday night. Should we actually call it “The Night Before?”

I bring this up to tell you that sometimes between Friday at 10p on the west and 7a on the east – headlines are made. But currently as I cruise the link pools out there there is nothing happening.

The highlight that many of you may have missed, but not all (I saw your comments) was an excellent interview over at The Big Lead with Al Michaels…McIntyre has been seriously bringing it lately. The Commish, Scott Van Pelt, and now Al Michaels??? Remember when they started with Whitlock? We get linked to by TBL from time to time and we sincerely appreciate being asociated with that fine organization.

It did become official that Ricketts and not Mark Cuban gets ownership of the Cubs. Me, along with many other Cub fans are very bummed about this…I guess I should read this 100x to start to feel better…but for some reason (that I hope I get to take back in October) – I feel like this is just another heartbreaking loss for the Cubs. At least we will get a bunch of NL Central banners now that CC is gone and Sheets is as good as gone from Milwaukee….Prince Fielder be damned.

Since we are on the baseball train – the NYYs moved into the new offices at the new stadium….followed by this link, this link, and this link. Apologies to all non NYY fans.

Fringe sport alert….just to keep it fresh. Golf - TennisWinter X Games - and Hockey…yeah I called Hockey a fringe sport – You mad?

NBA Scores and Recaps from Friday include Mavs > Pistons and Cavs > Warriors…No Magic – No Lakers. Sorry Miz…Knicks pwned the Grizz.

Collegiate Hoops? Obliged….no top 25 teams - Coulda ignored it, and no one woulda noticed.

I could tell you whats on TV today…but GITC did such a great job yesterday Ill just link you to it. Ahh fuck it – Ill cut and paste all of Saturday for you….Just turn on ESPN for the most part with The Golf Channel or ESPN2 on “last”…have your alternate TV set for CBS and ESPNU…Could be a busy day at the Tivo remote for alot of you.

Saturday is full of College Basketball so I’m just going to list them…

There are two sessions of Winter X13 on Saturday. The first is from 3pm to 6pm on ABC. That session features Snowboarder X (which is 8 guys racing down the hill on boards), and Snowboard SlopeStyle which is where people do individual runs down the hill on some quasi-obstacles and jumps. Both of those competitions have both male and female events. The later session (ESPN at 9pm) has the elimination (preliminary) round of Men’s Snowboard SuperPipe (that’s the giant halfpipe and Shaun White and all that stuff), the final of Snowmobile Snowcross (explained earlier), and Skiing Big Air (guys jump over the biggest ramp trying to do the craziest trick they can think of while trying not to miss the ramp on the way down).

Also on Saturday is the 4th day of the Bob Hope Classic at 4pm on the Golf Channel, the Australian Open (round of 16) on ESPN2 at 10pm and 3:30am, and the NHL All Star Skills Competitions (that’s where they do all that shooting at targets and fast slapshot and other stuff) on Versus at 7pm

h/t to gitc…./ sincere

I will assume that at some point today there will be a College Basketball Comment section posted for your commenting pleasure….until then, go ahead and rant here. Leave us any tips or links in the comments below. Together, we can and will make Sparty and Friends your destination for Sports….even on a weekend as slow as this one.
