So… What is it I’m Supposed to be Watching This Weekend?

By guyinthecorner
Just kidding. Theres tons of stuff on TV.

Just kidding. There's tons of stuff on TV.

When you’ve gotten so accustomed to watching football every Sunday, what do you do when there just isn’t any? I’ll tell you what you do. You watch the stuff listed after the jump.

Tonight until 9:30pm (and again at 11:30pm and 3:30am) there is the Australian Open on ESPN2. At 7pm there is the NBA Friday Night game on ESPN featuring the Mavs and Pistons. After that at 9:30pm on ESPN is Day 2 of Winter X13. The events are the first round of SnoCross (8 guys on snowmobiles racing on the same track and crashing into each other), the finals of Women’s SuperPipe (a bunch of girls who can really fly above a giant half-pipe on the side of a mountain on snowboards), and the long awaited Snowmobile Next Trick (guys go off a big ramp and try to top each other for the best single trick on their snowmobile). I should point out that Levi Lavallee (who is probably pretty pissed that he was upset in the finals of Snowmobile Speed & Style last night) says he will attempt a double back flip on his snowmobile. Yeah. He’s practiced into a foam pit and it looks like he can pull it off. He could also just not get the sled all the way around and it could crush him to death. I wouldn’t miss that. On ESPN2 at 9:30pm is a High School match-up between Fairfax and San Diego both of California. Let’s put it this way; you’re not watching this game to see a good game. Fairfax is #19 in the country and San Diego is no match. You’re watching this game because you want to see Renardo Sidney. He’s ranked #10 in the country by Rivals and #5 by ESPN. He still hasn’t made up his mind and is considering LSU, Mississippi State, USC, UCLA, Arizona State, UNLV, and Virginia. He’s really good. ESPNU is also running a triple header with games at 7pm, 9pm, and 11pm. That sounds exciting until you realize that the match-ups are Canisius/Marist, Cleveland State/Youngstown State, and San Fransisco/Santa Clara. And no, none of those are the good mid-major teams.

Saturday is full of College Basketball so I’m just going to list them…
Maryland at Duke
, ESPN, noon
Kansas at Iowa State
, ESPN, 2 p.m.
American at Holy Cross
, ESPNU, 2 p.m.
DePaul at Marquette
, ESPN2, 2 p.m.
Memphis at Tennessee
, CBS, 3:30 p.m.
Wisconsin at Illinois
, ESPN, 4 p.m.
Baylor at Oklahoma
, ESPNU, 4 p.m.
George Mason at Virginia Commonwealth
, ESPN2, 4 p.m.
Utah at UNLV
, Versus, 4 p.m.
Mississippi State at Georgia
, ESPN2, 6 p.m.
Charlotte at Temple, ESPNU, 6 p.m.
Connecticut at Notre Dame
, ESPN, 7 p.m.
Xavier at LSU
, ESPN2, 8 p.m.
Texas at Texas A&M, ESPNU, 8 p.m.
UC Santa Barbara at Pacific, ESPNU, 10 p.m.

There are two sessions of Winter X13 on Saturday. The first is from 3pm to 6pm on ABC. That session features Snowboarder X (which is 8 guys racing down the hill on boards), and Snowboard SlopeStyle which is where people do individual runs down the hill on some quasi-obstacles and jumps. Both of those competitions have both male and female events. The later session (ESPN at 9pm) has the elimination (preliminary) round of Men’s Snowboard SuperPipe (that’s the giant halfpipe and Shaun White and all that stuff), the final of Snowmobile Snowcross (explained earlier), and Skiing Big Air (guys jump over the biggest ramp trying to do the craziest trick they can think of while trying not to miss the ramp on the way down).

Also on Saturday is the 4th day of the Bob Hope Classic at 4pm on the Golf Channel, the Australian Open (round of 16) on ESPN2 at 10pm and 3:30am, and the NHL All Star Skills Competitions (that’s where they do all that shooting at targets and fast slapshot and other stuff) on Versus at 7pm.

On Sunday there is a smaller college basketball slate but nevertheless…
Navy at Army, ESPNU, 12 p.m.
Florida at Vanderbilt
, CBS, 1:30 p.m.
Michigan State at Ohio State, CBS, 3:45 p.m.
Northern Iowa at Missouri State, ESPNU, 7 p.m.

There’s also a 4pm college hockey game between Harvard and Dartmouth, if you like that kind of thing, on ESPNU. The other hockey thing on Sunday is the NHL All Star Game which is on Versus at 6pm. The other snow events are the last day of Winter X13. There are two sessions; ESPN from 2pm-6pm and ESPN from 9pm-11pm. In the first session there is the Final of Skier X (8 people race down mountain) for both men and women, the elimination (preliminary) round for Snowmobile Freestyle (guys run the course combining tricks to try to get the best score), Skiing Slopestyle (guys run down the mountain over some obstacles and jumps trying for the best score), and Mono Skier (disabled people try the downhill course on a single ski). The second session will have the finals of Snowmobile Freestyle and, of course saving the best for last, the finals of Men’s Snowboard Superpipe.

Also on Sunday is more Australian Open Round of 16 coverage (9pm and 3:30am on ESPN2) and an NBA triple header between ABC and ESPN. The three games are Mavs/Celts, Spurs/Lakers, Rockets/Pistons, so that should be fun.

So if you thought there was nothing to watch, you were wrong. If you thought there was stuff to watch then I typed a lot for no reason.

He doesn’t watch hockey except when the circumstances are dire. He’s not sure how to rate Michael Phelps on the scale of athletes not only because he doesn’t directly compete against people, but because he is a fish. He doesn’t understand the hate for the 2002 National Champion Maryland Terrapins and wishes everybody would just shut up by now. He is known for having statistical formulas and might be Bill James or Joe Lunardi depending on who you ask.
