College Football Final Standings: S&F Edition

By guyinthecorner
The final edition? Maybe.

The final edition? Maybe.

We all know that there is some confusion as to who is the champion of college football this season. Utah has the best record. Florida won the championship game. USC is the best on the field. Texas might have the best resume. Who should be ranked where?

That’s the question that led to me asking the other writers for their top six teams in order for the end of the year standings. Just to be clear, here is a wrap-up of the teams’ credentials…

Florida – Beat Oklahoma (currently 5th, 1st at the time) 24-14 in the actual BCS National Championship Game, beat Alabama (currently 6th, 1st at the time) 31-20 in the SEC Championship game, beat Florida State (currently 21st/23rd, 20th at the time), beat South Carolina (currently unranked, 25th at the time), beat Georgia (currently 10th/13rd, 6th at the time), beat LSU (currently unranked, 4th at the time), lost to Ole Miss (currently 13th/14th, unranked at the time).

USC – Beat Penn State (currently 8th, 8th at the time) 38-24 in the Rose Bowl, beat California (currently 25th/unranked, 21st at the time), beat Oregon (currently 9th/10th, 23rd at the time), lost to Oregon State (currently 18th/19th, unranked at the time) 27-21, beat Ohio State (currently 9th/11th, 5th at the time) 35-3.

Utah – Beat Alabama (currently 6th, 4th at the time) in the Sugar Bowl 31-17, beat BYU (currently 21/25, 14th at the time), beat TCU (currently 7th, 12th all time) 13-10, beat Oregon State (currently 18th/19, unranked at the time).

Texas – Beat Ohio State (currently 9th/11th, 10th at the time) in the Fiesta Bowl, lost to Texas Tech (currently 12th, 7th at the time), beat Oklahoma State (currently 16th/18th, 6th at the time), beat Missouri (currently 16th/19th, 11th at the time), beat Oklahoma (currently 5th, 1st at the time) 45-35.

TCU – Beat Boise State (currently 11th/13th, 9th at the time) in Ponsietta Bowl, lost to Utah (currently 2nd/4th, 8th at the time), beat BYU (currently 21/25, 9th at the time), lost to Oklahoma (currently 5th, 2nd at the time) 35-10.

Oklahoma – Lost to Florida (currently 1st, 2nd at the time) 24-14 in the actual BCS National Championship Game, beat Missouri (currently 16th/19th, 20th at the time) in the Big XII Championship Game, beat Oklahoma State (currently 16th/18th, 12th at the time), beat Texas Tech (currently 12th, 2nd at the time), beat Kansas (currently unranked, 16th at the time), lost to Texas (currently 3rd/4th, 5th at the time) 45-35, beat TCU (currently 7th, 24th all time) 35-10, beat Cincinnati (currently 17th, unranked at the time).

Penn State – Lost to USC (currently 2nd/3rd, 5th at the time) in the Rose Bowl 38-24, beat Michigan State (currently 24th, 15th at the time), lost to Iowa (currently 20th, unranked at the time), beat Ohio State (currently 9th/11th, 9th at the time) 13-6, beat Illinois (currently unranked, 22nd at the time), beat Oregon State (currently 18th/19th, unranked at the time).

Alabama – Lost to Utah (currently 2nd/4th, 6th at the time) in the Sugar Bowl 31-17, lost to Florida (currently 1st, 4th at the time) in the SEC Championship game 31-20, beat LSU (currently unranked, 16th at the time), beat Ole Miss (currently 13th/14th, unranked at the time), beat Georgia (currently 10th/13rd, 3rd at the time), beat Clemson (currently unranked, 9th at the time).

Here are the Sparty and Friends final rankings and voting breakdowns:

1. Florida – 46 points (7 1st place, 1 3rd place)
2. USC – 34 points (1 1st place, 3 2nd place, 1 3rd place, 3 4th place)
3. Utah – 33 points (2 2nd place, 5 3rd place, 1 4th place)
4. Texas – 31 points (3 2nd place, 1 3rd place, 4 4th place)
5. TCU – 11 points (4 5th place, 3 6th place)
6. Oklahoma – 10 points (4 5th place, 2 6th place)
7. Penn State – 2 points (2 6th place)
8. Alabama – 1 point (1 6th place)

So there you have it. The Boss says that the ballots will not become public unless the authors feel they want to do so in the comments. I will respond to such questions. The debate takes place below…

    My Ballot:

Explanation is that USC is the best football team right now and they would have beaten either of the teams that played last night. As for Utah, they went undefeated. I don’t know how they would fare against Florida but I have to give them the benefit of the doubt because they never lost.  (Quote)

I would completely agree with these final rankings — and might even consider bumping Texas up to #3. Utah probably has the best resume on here. But, I do not think Utah beats USC, or either team that played last night. I would say that USC may be the best team in the country, but we can say that every year. In fact, I think Pete Carroll does say that every January 2nd or so….. Too bad he keeps getting that unexplainable loss in September every year.  (Quote)

Explanation is that USC is the best football team right now and they would have beaten either of the teams that played last night.

Florida vs. USC would be a great game since both teams play offense AND defense well. I have to disagree though, Florida > USC.

As for Utah, they went undefeated. I don’t know how they would fare against Florida but I have to give them the benefit of the doubt because they never lost.

so what’s your cutoff for how many teams this applies to? I guess that if any MWC team runs that gauntlet of a conference schedule undefeated their name would be in place of Utah’s? what about a MAC team such as Bowling Green (who came very close to an undefeated season this year)? let’s look at CUSA for a minute…ECU started out strong with some big O-o-C wins; would they be in the place of UTAH Utah had they finished undefeated?

ed note: sorry, didn’t mean to textually scream Utah…just got excited and held the shift key too long.  (Quote)

  • knightwhosaysni says:

Bowling Green came close to being undefeated? In which universe?  (Quote)

  • mikeychx says:

the big hole in gitc explaination is as follows

Explanation is that USC is the best football team right now and they would have beaten either of the teams that played last night

thats all opinion and does not contain one fact

the other hole is that he ranks USC ahead of Utah

if you are going to stick with the stubbornness you would be required to rank Utah ahead of SC because Utah beat Oregon State who beat USC….this means based on common opponent that

    utah > usc

this is why UF is #1  (Quote)

  • mizerle06 says:

+1 kwsn; I was thinking Boise St. but for some reason typed Bowling Green.  (Quote)

  • knightwhosaysni says:

Explanation is that USC is the best non-BCS Championfootball team right now

  • knightwhosaysni says:

Well, Boise St. isn’t in the MAC so that’d still be a little difficult. You’d need to turn that M upside down. The state of Ball is the team from the MAC that almost went undefeated until they lose their last 2 in epic chokeritude.  (Quote)

  • guyinthecorner says:

I feel that way about any team with a legit schedule. The Mountain West is not the MAC.  (Quote)

  • mizerle06 says:

sorry, kwsn. gitc got me worked up. I said BGSU, clarified that I meant Boise St, when altogether I meant Ball St.

kwsn-as long as we don’t have to print more money to pay for it, i am down with that.  (Quote)

  • guyinthecorner says:

I would say that my USC argument not having facts is a byproduct of this stupid system. I didn’t say Utah was ahead of Florida because they were undefeated, I said that I used that as a tiebreaker because I don’t think I can tell who’s better. USC I can tell. They are the best team right now.  (Quote)

  • natsfan74 says:

If we want to talk legit schedules, Utah is #1. They beat more ranked teams than anyone else (considering end of season rankings only, not considering when LSU was #4 and non-bowl eligible Auburn was #5). But, I would say that schedule is the only reason Utah got as far as it did anyway. Tulsa and Ball State (when they were both undefeated) were not ranked nearly as high because of their schedules. But, by week 8, when things started to heat up, Utah had already beaten Oregon State and Michigan (unranked, but on the road vs big school). They still had TCU and BYU down the stretch, so that’s pretty legit. In fact, Utah wan more non-conference games vs ranked teams (1 – counting regular season only) than did most other ranked schools including Alabama and Texas.  (Quote)

  • natsfan74 says:

Wins vs. Ranked Non-Conference Opponents, regular season variety:
    UF > FSU
    Utah > Oregon State
    USC > tOSU
    Oklahoma > TCU, Cincinnati
PSU > OSU (the one without the t)

and sadly, that’s it for our top 10. I am glad that USC and Ohio State know how to make a schedule, otherwise the ACC/ SEC Challenge would be our only non-conference games worth watching every year.  (Quote)

  • mikeychx says:

well…utahs coach is on right now…and he made more sense than any of us

he said…”the current system is not about who is the best team…its who had the best season”

if this indeed is the cirteria – utah would be #1…but they started out too faer out of the equation to garner the necessary votes  (Quote)

  • mizerle06 says:

USC I can tell. They are the best team right now.

    please justify this.  (Quote)

  • sparty says:

tOSU knows how to schedule? they play an FCS school every year.  (Quote)

  • mikeychx says:

what are you basing your “opinion” on gitc….USC hasnt beaten anyone this season except for tOSU without beanie wells and Penn State….

your opinion holds no water at all

    Florida??

Beat Oklahoma (currently 5th, 1st at the time) 24-14 in the actual BCS National Championship Game, beat Alabama (currently 6th, 1st at the time) 31-20 in the SEC Championship game, beat Florida State (currently 21st/23rd, 20th at the time), beat South Carolina (currently unranked, 25th at the time), beat Georgia (currently 10th/13rd, 6th at the time), beat LSU (currently unranked, 4th at the time), lost to Ole Miss (currently 13th/14th, unranked at the time).

i usually never tell anyone their opinion is stupid…but your opinion is stupid  (Quote)

  • sparty says:

hey, and who voted PSU in the top 6? you fucking morons!!!  (Quote)

  • guyinthecorner says:

    miz-

Are you serious? It’s not like I’m the only one with this opinion.

USC’s defense would destroy Tebow. Why? Because they are basically an NFL defense. Tebow’s little crap like the fake handoffs and running over people in the middle won’t take down Rey Maualuga. Jump pass? Please. USC’s offense is also quite good. You thought Oklahoma was running effectivly? Wait till you see what the 5-headed USC RB monster would do to them. Oh yeah, and they have a better coach.  (Quote)

  • sparty says:

Are you serious? It’s not like I’m the only one with this opinion.

gitc-according to the AP rankings, only 1 person agrees with you out of 65, and nobody in the coaches poll.

so you are correct. you are not the only ONE.  (Quote)

  • mizerle06 says:

gitc – I could take that entire paragraph you just wrote and substitute any USC reference with a Florida reference and have the same conclusion. so I must ask you, “Are you serious?”  (Quote)

  • sparty says:

i don’t think Oklahoma ran effectively. 107 yards in a college game is not good, and neither is 3.7 yards a clip. they ran well on one drive.  (Quote)

  • guyinthecorner says:

    mikey-

Oregon is a top 10 team yet they don’t count?

Look, you can’t blame USC for playing in the Pac-10. They played who was on their schedule and tried to play a very hard non-conference game. Is it their fault Beanie hurt himself? Don’t tell me Beanie helps Ohio State win that either. It was 35-3 and it could have been 49-3 but USC took their foot off the gas. They were also up 31-7 on Penn State before they slowed it down after halftime.

It’s their fault they didn’t get to prove it in the Championship game because the computers don’t like their conference schedule?

Yeah, they lost a game. So did everyone other than Utah. But if you watched both last night’s game and USC/Penn State you can’t say my argument is stupid.  (Quote)

  • natsfan74 says:

tOSU plays an FCS school in-state every year…. it’s Tressel’s way of giving back (mostly playing his old school). And, they also play a top 5 non-conference team every year. Texas in 05-06 (anomoly was 07 when Washington sucked). USC in 08-09. In the 10-17 seasons, the non-conference schedule includes 2 games with Miami, 2 with Virginia Tech, 2 with Oklahoma. That’s pretty good scheduling if you ask me….  (Quote)

  • mizerle06 says:

    @natsfan – Tennessee v. tO$U in 2018 and 2019.  (Quote)

  • sparty says:

    natsfan-i guess so.

but that FCS game could cost them a BCS game. had their been a 3 way tie in the Big 10, MSU would have won the title because the 1st tie breaker in a 3way tie in the Big Ten is whether or not someone played any FCS games. Didn’t matter that they lost big to OSU. PSU would have got the at large bid. just sayin it could come back to bite them one year.  (Quote)

  • guyinthecorner says:

Oklahoma’s back-up running back had to start and ran for 110 on 22 carries. I say effective.  (Quote)
