Are You Paying Attention Yet!?

Submitted by mizerle06 on January 6, 2009 – 12:30 pm13 Comments

So I was checking my Tennessee basketball pocket schedule yesterday and realized that SEC play was about to begin.  Then, I looked at how many games had been played and how many were left – 12 games played out of 30!  Aaaaaah; 40% of the regular season has already gone by!  I knew about each game, watched the ones that were broadcast in my region, and even traveled to a few.  But, I wasn’t prepared for the realization that the regular season is already approaching its midpoint.

Most teams have already begun conference play; in fact, among the six major conferences, only the SEC and Big XII have yet to play conference games.  Needless to say, we’re getting into the meat of the season so let’s take a look at the rankings (as of Monday):

College Basketball Polls (Jan. 5, 2009)

There not a whole lot of agreement in there and there’s definitely been some shuffling around since the first polls, especially recently with “invincible” UNC losing to an unranked Boston College team…at home…and Pitt making some major noise in already.  Pitt, Wake Forest, and Clemson are the only top 25 teams without an “L” on their resume.  By the way, does anybody else feel like Duke just snuck up on the #2 ranking?

Oh yeah, remember these:  2009 NCAA Basketball Champion UConn/Mich. State/Tennessee?  All three teams have looked streaky and jittery at times.  UConn was beat down by Georgetown, Michigan State was surprised by Maryland and pounded by North Carolina, and Tennessee has lost away from home to Gonzaga, Temple, and Kansas.

College football finishes up this week and the NFL is in the throes of the playoffs so college basketball is about to become the forefront.  Stick around; it’ll be fun!

so, michigan state is back where they started, and Uconn is pretty much where they started. The Vols have sucked it big time.

This is the first time in a while that the Gophers have been ranked. We shall see where they are come tourney time, but it is actually fun to watch Gopher basketball again.

Yeah when it comes to the Penn State basketball program my stance is to not pay attention, assume they’re bad and if not be pleasently surprised.

    They need a coach

As a Syracuse fan, it is good to see the Orange among the top teams in the country.

My gripe about the RPI is that if you play 5 top teams and 5 bottom teams that schedule strength is the same as playing 10 middle teams. Obviously a team that is 8-2 that played the first schedule has better wins than the team with the same record who played the 10 average teams.

My friend just got tickets to see Syracuse play St. Johns at MSG. Usually the crowd is half Syracuse half St. Johns these days since St. Johns has fallen on lean times.

I really need to make it to Williams to catch a game this year. And it’s too bad the NCAA 1st & 2nd rounds are at the fucking Metrodome.

Holy crap Penn State is 12-3. Of course they haven’t played a good team yet but here’s hoping for a NIT birth (gotta keep expectations low)
