The Morning After: December 29, 2008

Submitted by mikeychx on December 29, 2008 – 5:35 am53 Comments

The Morning AfterGood Morning Sports Fans…Anyone out there still on vacation this week? I am pretty much off until January 5th…another whole week  to hang out…take in some more bowl games, watch some hoops….etc. Don’t know if I will be able to stand it…..it’s truly a curse.

The playoffs are now set in the NFL…

Shockingly In: Philadelphia Eagles
Shockingly Out: New England Patriots

All things considered the biggest story may be everyone’s preseason Super Bowl pick, the Dallas Cowboys getting eliminated…The best story maybe the Atlanta Falcons and Miami Dolphins  return to relevance. Wild Card Weekend is set…

Saturday’s Games:

11-5  Atlanta Falcons @ 9-7 Arizona Cardinals
9-6-1 Philadelphia Eagles @10-6 Minnesota Vikings

Sunday’s Games:

12-4 Indianapolis Colts @ 8-8 San Diego Chargers
11-5 Baltimore Ravens @ 11-5 Miami Dolphins

The Byes: Tennessee, New York Giants, Carolina, and Pittsburgh….So what do you guys think?

[polldaddy poll=1230040]

[polldaddy poll=1230047]

So the Eagles owned the Cowboys yesterday – Completing another December collapse. Speaking of a collapse…evidently Tony Romo collapsed after the game in the shower….embarassing? Yes…but not as embarassing as slapping your wife in the face on National TV.

0-16 is complete…The Lions now assume the title of worst team ever after losing their final game to Green Bay. Where do they go from here? Some people seem to think that Bill Parcells would be interested in taking over….Seriously?

You gotta figure that heads start to roll today. Is Romeo Crennell out? Phil Savage Is… Who else will probably follow him? Tom Cable, Rod Marinelli, Herm Edwards….One Guy not worrying about his job is Mike Singletary who was deservedly handed the 49ers job for the next four years. In a bizarre twist – Jerry Jones is still backing Wade Phillips - Much to the delight of Sparty and most of the friends. Speaking of making Sparty happy…the Patriots miss the playoffs AND Tom Brady is behind in rehab?

Is Brad Penny the best answer to give to the Yankees off season signings? Apparently, the Red Sox seem to think so.

Basketball action will be recapped later today by GITC….in the mean time I found you a list of “the best of” from 2008…

Enjoy another short week  – Bowl Week is in full effect this week…21 games in the next seven days as we count down to a UF BCS Championship….hopefully we get TWTWCFB everyday this week…In the mean time take a look back at the expert predictions for the NFL this year to see how badly most of us missed….

I don’t think I have it in me to root for the WCNYFG. I considered it, but no one on the team is really likeable.

Fandom aside, (and this is painful to suggest), we might see a manning bowl. Both teams look good this year. I don’t see anyone stopping the Colts

Wait! He’s the only one that correctly called that gem. Now, most people’s Super Bowl picks are screwed.

If the Champs do go back to back, tied in with 4 consecutive post season appearances, is Tom Coughlin the greatest Giants coach ever? Those are all things that Parcells did not do.

Sparty the Red Sox already had their CC and AJ in the form of Lester and Beckett. The Penny signing gives them a solid 5th starter to fill out the rotation. This was not about trying to match the yankees signing. Nobody can match the Yankees in terms of being able to sign players.

    correction/clarification to above comment #1:

the 21 games in 7 days part is what makes me happy, not the UF BCS Championship part. but, somebody’s gotta win and I don’t want it to be Oklahoma, so a UF BCS Championship will make me happy for about one second…the first second when the game is officially decided. then, after that, I’ll be really annoyed because I have to listen to more “Gators are champs” crap.

I was checking our bowl mania and noticed that Patphish appeared in contention. I couldn’t remember him being there before and clicked on his entry. Then I realized that while all of us took Northern Illinois yesterday (I luckily only took them for 3 points), Patphish took LaTech. Not only that, but he took them for 21 points!

My radio is telling me the Jets owner is holding a press conference at 10:00. I’m guessing he will announce that he is signing Mangenius to a multi-year contract extension and that he hopes to bring Favre back for at least two more seasons, because if it ain’t broke…

I think I picked LA Tech too, but my name is waaaay down on the bottom, I’m sure!

I know the Browns had an abysmal year, but I think Randy Lerner is not making his own decisions here. The dumb-ass fans in this city call in to sports radio like they know what’s going on, and they sound ridiculous. The management and coaches are not to blame for the injuries that this team has endured. They are responsible for the infantile actions of their players and not using discipline when necessary. What a shitty year.
