Breaking News: Auburn Hires Gene Chizik
So it turns out that Sparty and Friends aren’t the only ones to get Coaching Rumors wrong. It turns out that Fox 10 in Mobile was wrong too. Gene Chizik has been hired as the Auburn Head Coach according to TheSporting News. Chizik leaves behind the Iowa State program as their Head Coach.
Chizik was the Defensive Coordinator at Auburn when they went undefeated in 2004 by having the nations top ranked Defense that allowed on 11 PPG. Chizik is 5-19 at Iowa State including 2-10 this year. his record makes him a curious hire to say the least, especially with names like Spurrier, Muschamp, and Gill having been floated with in the last week.
The Ralphie Report broke the news that Chizik was interviewing for the position yesterday.

I’m interested to hear what Auburn fans think of this hire. I know he had some success there when he was a coordinator, but 5-19 over the last 2 years as a head coach would have me concerned.

I get the “he coached here before angle.” BUT, shouldn’t he have a better track record coming into a SEC school? I mean, I know Dan Mullen has zero head coaching experience, but Auburn is a little higher up the ladder than MSU.

My Auburn-fan co-worker said earlier in the week that he expected Auburn to chase a cheap hire and just tolerate mediocrity for a few years. With the money they saved on the new coach, they’d be able to get a good coach in a few years.
I can’t imagine they wouldn’t be able to raise the money anyway, but there you go. I was hoping they’d hire Croom. I’m not sure how long I would have laughed.

I’m hoping for Tebow, but not because he plays in the SEC. I just think he’s the best.
I like Mullen so far, but I reserve the right to change my mind after we actually start playing football again. Anyway, I think he’s a good choice. Mississippi State hasn’t had anything resembling an offense in a long time, so it’s interesting to have an offensively-minded coach. We’ll see how it goes, but expectations are running high.
