In case you weren’t around on Friday last week you may have missed the frenzy that was created in all of Idaho when Sparty penned a post stating that Chris Petersen to Mississippi State was a done deal. Boise State fans flooded the comment boards with disparaging remarks calling into question Sparty’s integrity, his credibility…some even going as far to say that he set back blogs 10 years.
Through it all Sparty took the high road, allowing all of the disgruntled comments to remain visible for everyone to read…and even sticking around to return some of the jabs being thrown his way. I though it would be responsible for Sparty to clear the air and answer questions that Boise State fans as well as Mississippi State fans may have had in a short interview.
The following Q&A session highlights that interview. Take it in, chew it up, swallow it – or spit it out….it’s your choice. If you want your own questions asnwered, leave them in the comments section below, and Sparty will do his best to get to those questions as well….Before you comment understand this – we know that Petersen issued a statement pledging his undying devotion to BSU…and we know he says he is happy there – so please bring something new to the table with your Q&A’ s…in the meantime, here is what we asked Sparty…
Mikey: So it looks like you upset a couple of fan bases this weekend with the Chris Petersen rumors…you have been accused of having no integrity and you have been accused of posting the “rumor” to get hits hits for your site. First of all, I know you well enough to not question your integrity, so I will not question that. But talk for a minute about your motivation for going with your “source” on this story and why you felt compelled to go ahead with the story – even though the mainstream media had yet to pick it up.
Sparty: Let’s get one thing out of the way. It was most definitely not for “hits”, as what has been suggested by the Boise State fan base. But I can understand why they might think that. The source that passed on the information to me has not misled me once with information he has provided. As we have stated, he tipped us off about Lane Kiffin long before anyone in the mainstream media, we held off a couple hours waiting for a secondary source to pop up online. We could have done the same thing with Petersen, because only a couple hours later, a TV station in MS was reporting a contract had been extended. You think they only released that because of what a blog said? They had no idea about us when they learned of the information.
Mikey: Do you think people would be surprised to learn that the story only garnered about 45,000 hits for your site?
Sparty: Probably not, Bronco Stadium holds 32,000 fans. I am sure each one clicked.
Mikey: So, do you think the frenzy was created by Sparty and Friends specifically, or by all of the Boise State blogs that picked up the story?
Sparty: Well, I think we were at fault for most of it. But it hasn’t died because each person with a blog out there in Boise wants to give their opinion about what happened. But only them. Mississippi isn’t complaining, nor is anyone else.
Mikey: Your site correctly predicted the hiring of Lane Kiffin to Tennessee…you did get several hits on those “rumors” but the frenzy wasn’t nearly as high for Kiffin as they were for Petersen. What was the difference in the stories?
Sparty: We didn’t forward the information to Deadspin, and we didn’t use the definitive stance of “you can take this to the bank.” Also, the hiring of Kiffin wasn’t having an impact on another school. The Boise State fans were freaking out. I mean check it out, a blog that no one really heard of, forced their coach to make a statement. Which in itself is kinda strange.
Mikey: Chris Petersen stated he normally doesn’t comment on coaching positions at other schools, but felt the need to do so in this situation….what if anything do you take from that statement and why would claims form this “oddball / crappy site” as BSU fans put it, warrant a response from “Coach Pete?”
Sparty: The pressure he was getting from all the fans and the news in that state made this statement happen. This was THE news in Idaho. Any coach would have in his situation, if he was leaving or not. No coach wants to hurt the program they are currently at. What do I take from it? That he is not as honest as everyone wants to think. He was offered the job. Even news outlets in Boise that I was in contact with, thought that the truth was somewhere in between what I reported and what Petersen stated.
Mikey: Chris Mortensen among others have not been correct when quoting “sources” on more than one occasion…I am assuming they get significant amouts of hate mail and threats for incorrect information…highlight some of the more “threatening” emails you recieved and how they made you feel?
Sparty: Nothing really threatening. Just a lot of people from Boise, and Boise only, telling me that I am incredibly irresponsible, and how I have zero credibility. Though, I am not sure we really ever had any. But now they will say we never will. As far as how they made me feel? Eh, I work 7-5:30 everyday for a living, and it has nothing to do with this blog. This blog is all for fun. There are some people who take sports waaaaaaaaaay too seriously. The logical Boise State fans poked around the site and ended up hanging around for the weekend, realizing that our site is pretty damn good. They hung out with us and chatted during college and NFL action. I responded to some of the emailers , and I think I surprised them that I did. I think I gained a little respect from those individuals. Someone did email me that Bear Bryant was back from the dead and ready to take over Alabama, again. I received nothing from Mississippi State fans.
Mikey: One of your detractors specifically accused you of setting back the legitimacy of blogs…but he also went on to say that he only reports things that the main stream media has reported, in essence – putting his two cents in on what has already been reported….in fact, many blogs do exactly that – react to news that has already been reported. Your blog seems to do the same in several areas, but you have quite a lot of original material as well. I know you frequent sites like The Big Lead, Deadspin, and Major League Jerk…is your goal to be like these sites or blaze a different path? What do you see as your “mission statement” if you will?
Sparty: Mikey, I started this blog because I love sports and wanted to talk about it in just more than a comment section. I didn’t do it to become famous, or to eventually make money off it. I just love sports. I added authors because I didn’t want it to be just my opinion. Most blogs are not going to bring you the news as it happens. There are very few Matt Drudge’s out there, and I am not one of them. However, even Drudge has reported things too quickly. Accoding to online numbers, it hasn’t had much of a negative impact on him. I am not trying to be like anyone, just have a good time, not take ourselves too seriously. If we get a tip like we did, run with it. Maybe be a little more careful for others with faint heart conditions.
Look, when I walk away from the computer, my attention turns to what is real life for me. That is my wife, my son and the job I work. Even as much as I love the World Champion New York Football Giants, they don’t even come close to what I feel when my son wants to be with me. My priorities changed the day he was born 2.5 years ago. I refuse to lose sleep over Bronco Nation being hurt. I know they want me to be regretful, but sports don’t matter that much to invest myself either way.
Mikey: Do you still trust your source?
Sparty: Most definitely. He contacted me that same night that the letter of denial cameout from Petersen, he was shocked. He has also informed me that lines of communication remain open with Petersen. He did say that something broke down at the last minute. He said it was a “lock” until about 6pm on Friday. However he is saying it is more like 50% now.
Mikey: Do you stand by the “take it to the bank” statement?
Mikey: Based on that answer I have two questions. First, Does this mean that you think an announcement may come after the Poinsettia Bowl? Second, If a statement comes and you are proven correct, how does that impact the events of the past weekend?
Mikey: How will the way this specific story turned affect your release of “breaking news” in the future?
Sparty: We will still bring breaking news, but we may be more careful as to how we word it. It is not going to happen that often. However, that doesn’t mean we won’t be willing to show some balls and take a chance.

kevin – I’d like to point out that I hope your sentiments regarding Petersen’s integrity are correct. it would be nice to be able to have a person that practices what he preaches in a position such as his. I should admit, however, that I’m a wholehearted cynic when it comes to people with high public influence (politicians, athletes, coaches, etc.). I selectively respect traits or characteristics of individuals but there is not one famous person that I idolize wholly. Peyton Manning is my favorite football player (I’m a Tennessee grad and lifelong fan) and he seems to position himself as a high quality family guy. having said that, I would not be surprised to find out that he’s cheated on his wife because, right or wrong, that’s the nature of the beast that is humanity. anything more than a selective admiration is setting myself up for disappointment.
so, if Petersen practices what he preaches, awesome. but, I bet Saban talks about integrity, responsibility, and character to his players too.

Boys, nice work with the blog…I think your sources were dead on with the entire Peterson saga. I love reading the posts from BSU fans, must feel good to go 12-0 and play in a pre-xmas bowl game, plenty of good tickets still available. Hell, you can go 7-5 in the SEC, ACC, Big 10 or Big 12 and at least play around NYD and make more money. But why would Peterson want to leave Boise, I am starting to think he may not be able to be a small fish in a big pond…….Hearing that Wilson will probably be the pick in Starkville. Good hire if they go that route.

Well you can say that you have heard from another Mississippi State University fan now. I love this website Sparty, I think that, because of you, this search really has national credibility. Before, people would think of State and say “i think they werepretty good under Sherrill” but now they can say that they must be serious about a coach for it to make it onton your site. Keep it up, bro.
(Quote)
Sparty your source was dead on. Cant say how I know but I was hearing the same info put on this blog before you posted from non internet sources. Numbers and names all matched and this was well before it started this internet frenzy.

Here is another Mississippi State fan who appreciated you going with a “source” that had proven accurate in the past. If anyone is interested, for updates on the MSU search check out the best local MSU beat reporter, Kyle Veazey of clarionledger.com.
I did not know that u can track planes by their N-number using flightaware.com. In the past week, the MSU AD’s plane was in Kansas City (OU OC?), Dallas (TCU HC?), and Greenville, MS (pee break?). After the AD exited, the plane went to North Alabama (Hudspeth?).
The most recent suspects seem to be the OC’s of Oklahoma and Florida, with OU not commenting and the Florida OC expressing interest.
(Quote)
Another Mississippi State fan here. I had fun following the Petersen story, and even though you say he’s now completely out, I’m still hopeful. I’m just a dumb optimist like that.
As for the Boise fans? Look, “integrity” and “character” have been Sylvester Croom’s favorite two words for the past five years, but now it’s starting to look like he doesn’t have very much of either. If this man who based his entire career around integrity doesn’t have any, what makes you think a man whose career is based on winning has it?
Be realistic. Nearly triple pay in a better conference where he’ll get more exposure? Boise State is a great program and he’s done good things there, but it’s not an SEC or Big 12 program. I have nothing but respect for BSU and Coach Petersen, but you know as well as I do that Mississippi State offers more opportunities than Boise State.
(Quote)
bulldog george….keep us updated for sure
(Quote)
As a Mississippi State alum, booster, and fan, I salute your guts to report the story about Petersen and MSU. I, like you believe that the Petersen possibility still has legs. With the AD back in Starkville, for the time being, it looks like maybe a deal has been done with someone, or is pending completion.
I hope that we aren’t waiting for the bowl games to announce the new coach. We’re in danger of losing our top recruits, including Tyler Russell, a QB who has star quality. Already today, Wesley Carroll, our starting QB in 2007 as a true freshman, has requested a release from his scholarship, so he can transfer. In 2008, Croom pretty much ruined this kid, benching him, putting him in “no-win situations during games”, and worst of all, not developing him during year two.
Whether Petersen comes to MSU, or if it’s another candidate, we’re hoping that it will be earlier than later. The Boise State fans are as passionate as we are. We (MSU fans) aren’t their enemy. Ole Miss is. We covet a chance to have a winning program, so they can’t blame us for looking at their coach. If they were Washington State, they wouldn’t have to worry.
(Quote)
Omaha-that is the one thing that Byrne needs to do. Get this deal done now, and announced. Attrition is starting to kick in, and you do not want anymore. You also want to not only get started on completing next years incoming recruiting class, but get a jump on the following.
(Quote)
Sparty,
A source (Southern Sports Night) says that Kevin Wilson will be announced tomorrow as Head Coach of Mississippi State. Not sure how credible it is, but that’s what I just heard. I really hate passing on unsubstantiated info, but hopefully, you or your sources can chase this one down. It seems you’re credible.
(Quote)
My source was saying the same name earlier in the day. But he said at this point, Byrne has really put everything on lock down. Your guess is as good as mine.
(Quote)
It would make sense, because Byrne has been in Starkville for two days now, according to a reporter who is stalking him at his office. Boise Nation will breathe a sigh of relief, I’m sure.
One day, it would be nice to know what happened with the Petersen deal, that caused it to fall through. In fact, it would be good reading to know if there were any others that were seriously considered. That’s a job for you, Sparty. You might draw in some new fans to the blog.
(Quote)
to the MSU fans.
i guess i’m still not seeing the “oppourtunities” that Pete would have there.
Money? Clearly MSU can offer more. 2.25 mil per year is what everyone was saying. Boise will probraby max out at 1.25 base with 250,000 – 500,000 more for incentives. (x amount of wins, winning conference championship, bcs game…etc)
Better conference. Sure but when your losing to La Tech your program has a LONG way to go before it can even think about reaping the benefits of a NC game or automatic BCS bid.
I guess i’m not sure why Petersen would care if he goes to the Poinsetta or say Outback. Hes not getting the money from the bowl payouts, the school is. The University is the one getting screwed by the current system not Coach Pete. He still gets his money either way. As for exposure? More people will watch and care about BSU vs TCU then they will watch and care about South Carolina vs Iowa. Two top 12 teams vs a couple of nothings? Come on.
At Boise with the players hes bringing in right now hes going to have a chance to be in the top 15 every year and have a chance at the BCS every year.
Boise was in the BCS in 06. If they beat Hawaii last year they are back in the BCS, and this year they narrowly miss the BCS because Utah started out ranked higher and didnt lose and because the system is flawed.
(Quote)
Sparty,
Funny thing on this whole Peterson thing is he that great of a coach? Dan Hawkins at Colorado did the same thing and what has he done there pratically nothing. I do believe Miss. State will get a way better deal the Peterson.
(Quote)
here is some more evidence to prove my point. this guy thinks bsu vs tcu will be the fourth best bowl game out there.
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/blog/index?entryID=3755015&name=feldman_bruce
pete is going to get plenty of exposure. 1 COY award already and back in the finals for another? His star will only get brighter, and if he chooses to leave he will cash it in for something a little higher up the ladder than miss st. i could see a Cal, Texas Tech or Oregon.
(Quote)
Kevin, Don’t kid yourself. It’s very admirable that you’re proud of Boise State, as I am (and all MSU fans) of Mississippi State. I’m not saying that MSU is a great program. That’s why we were looking to raid your cabinet. Can’t blame us, can you?
On merit alone, the SEC carries alot more weight. Look, provided the opportunity, there were a half dozen bowl games, that could have picked Boise State, but did not. Instead, they picked teams with losses. I am a fan of Boise State, and felt the game against OK, was one of the more entertaining games in years, but the fact of the matter, your schedule works to your detriment, if you’re looking for national respect.
(Quote)
to all boise fans,
First thing I will say is that Peterson doestn’t have the “you know what” to coach in the SEC. Oh and if you beat Hawaii last year you just saved yourself the embrassment from what Georgia would have done to you in the Sugar Bowl. Let’s just say it wouldn’t have been pretty!
(Quote)
They are only rating bowl games on the fact that the game is evenly matched for entertainment value. Not that anyone is really staying awake at night, looking forward to watching Boise State or TCU.
(Quote)
aside from the bcs games there were no other major bowl games that could have picked Boise. Its all about conference tie ins. If a conference has the teams bowl eligible then the bowls have to pick them. So just for example if the SEC has 5 teams bowl eligible (they prolly have more i’m just saying as an example) then the bowl tied in with the conference have to pick an SEC team.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automatic_bids_to_non-BCS_bowls
They can swap the order of the teams, but they cant go out and choose a WAC school like Boise. Again my point is this screws the universities, not the coaches. People are going to watch bowls based on the matchups not based on if its an SEC or WAC school. My argument is that Pete is still going to get more exposure in the Poinsetta bowl in a #9 vs #12 matchup than if he would if he was the coach at an SEC school playing in the Outback Bowl. Two unranked teams. I mean who are you going to watch?
SEC vs WAC “respect” wise. No doubt SEC wins everytime. But Boise is getting plenty of respect. They are #9 in the nation. Its not their fault the BCS is about money.
(Quote)
petersen doesnt have the “you know what” to coach in the SEC.
Apparently you missed a little game called the Fiesta Bowl in which he coached. It prolly doesnt take any “you know what” to put your entire season on a statue of liberty play. naaa that doesnt take any at all.
in front of the whole nation.
(Quote)
Boise State is a great team. Way better than Mississippi State. Boise State is better now than Mississippi State has ever been. There’s no question at all about that. But we keep better company, and that counts for a lot.
I mean, look, we play LSU and Alabama every year. We play Florida and Tennessee every other year (actually two years on, two years off, in a four-year rotation, but it averages; I’d rattle off more conference names, but I really think these four rule the roost for now). This year we played the defending national champions and the (at-that-time) #1 team in the country. Yes, we lost both games, but we are their competition. Boise State is not.
That’s what makes the Mississippi State job attractive. Because here, if you lose, you lose to a better class of opponent.
(Quote)
And I need to back up on my post a little bit. Again, no disrespect at all to Boise State. They played a tough schedule this year against some really good opponents, and they came out on top. But the key phrase there is “this year.”
It’s not about what’s happening right now, or for the next year or two. It’s about what happens every single year. Mississippi State plays top-tier teams every single year. If you coach here, you’re guaranteed high-profile games. That’s what I meant, and I apologize for needing two posts to say it.
(Quote)
yes if petersen went 12-0 in the SEC he would get more respect than if he goes 12-0 in the WAC. I guess my point is he is already going 12-0 in the WAC and has been in the running for the BCS each of the three years hes been here. My point is its not worth the risk for him to go to the bottom of the SEC and try to work his way up? For an extra 750,000 or so? Why? Why would he want to set up his entire recruting network all over again? Have to start from the ground and work his way up against the teams you just mentioned? Flordia, LSU, Bama. The deck is stacked against him.
Where in Boise he is the top dawg. Even if we move to the MWC, Boise will compete for the conference right away. Also if Boise moves to the MWC (which there are serious talks about) whos to say the MWC doesnt get the Big Easts autobid soon after? The conference from top to bottom would be better.
Its just not worth the risk, especially when he already has it made in Boise.
I mean really, if you were set for life, making over a million a year in a place your happy in why would you risk it for a job in which four years you could be out, and have your name tarnished.
(Quote)
plus as for exposure, boise was on espn like 5-6 times this year.
(Quote)
For fun? He’s already set for life, why not take on a challenge? I mean seriously, couldn’t you live the rest of your life comfortably on $9 million? Once that paycheck doesn’t matter anymore, why would you stay somewhere that doesn’t offer a significant challenge?
If I was guaranteed $9 million for such a daunting challenge, I’d go for it. Why the hell not? In the worst case, I fail, make $9 million, and never have to work again. In the best case, I succeed, make $9 million, and never have to work again. Where’s the downside?
(Quote)
at some point when you have enough money…it is about legacy….do you wanna be the best coach ever in the CFL or the NFL?….Do you want the Home Run Record in Japan or in the MLB…
At some point doubt creeps in…you need to wonder how you stack up against the big boys…this is why Pete will eventually leave no matter what (see steve spurrier, redskins)
Also, once you are “set for life” it becomes about making sure that your childrens, childrens, children are set for life
(Quote)
I dunno. just basing it on his salary this year I’d take the 4.4 over the next four years, and be guarenteed 10 wins and a chance at the BCS every year. Plus after the four years i know i’d still have a job where as with the other option, yeah i’d have double the money but i might not have a job anymore.
I guess it just depends on the top of person. luckily coach pete is more like me. haha. you guys will find a coach for that kind of money though. 9 mil i mean not a lot of people are going to turn that down.
(Quote)
in other words….no one wants to go to their grave saying….”i wonder what woulda happened if________”
(Quote)
really its all going to depend what happens in the next few years. i think boise will be in the mwc within the next three, and i think that conference will have an automatic bcs bid within five.
isnt it guarenteed to happen if the mwc teams keep finishing ranked higher than the big easts?
(Quote)
Some people never even stop to wonder, mikey. Those are career people who live to work. I think Kevin made that point: “yeah, i’d have double the money but i might not have a job anymore.”
My question is would you really care? You wouldn’t need a job. You could do whatever the you wanted. I just don’t see how you can consider it a risk when the two possible outcomes both include “set for life.”
So even if you made the argument purely on money, which I’m not, this is still the more attractive job.
(Quote)
Anyway, Coach Petersen has a great thing going for him there in Boise. It’s been fun bantering with you, Kevin. Obviously BSU has some passionate fans!
I’m thinking about getting a Boise State t-shirt. That would be fun.
(Quote)
i agree DC….you get to measure yourself against the best…thats what i meant….eventually its not about money….but legacy
its like this….steve spurrier ( i am a gator fan) will always be remembered for UF….not SC or Washington…Just like Lou Holtz will always be remembered for ND…not SC
I cant tell you how well Urban Meyer did at Utah…but everyone will remember what he does at Florida…
Legacy
After all the money, its all that matters
(Quote)
Kevin—you say the BCS is all about the money and I don’t necessarily disagree, however can you blame them for taking Utah or Ohio State? You guys had a strength of schedule around 113 and only played 1 ranked team, at least Utah scheduled Michigan out of conference and had 2 other ranked teams in their conference that they beat. I know you have no control over how bad the WAC is, but come on, it comes down to you guys and Fresno every year with maybe one other team in it every couple of years (i.e. Hawaii last year, that turned out real well in the Bowl game).
At some point as a HC don’t you want to challenge yourself, yes, it is nice to go 10-2, 11-1, or 12-0 many years, but come on, play someone.
(Quote)
I live in Meridian, and while there is a strong case for Petersen to stay just on quality of life in this part of Idaho, its amazing btw, he is an absolute stud and he has aspirations to match his talent. If he is attracted to the MSU job, its probably because he wants to challenge himself by getting out of the comfort zone of the WAC where he coaches or the West Coast where he played. The man has taken “quarterback friendly” system to a new level in coaching. Maybe he wants to go out on top.

Sparty
Unlike many so called ‘fans’ of sports out there, i believe what you did last week was just fine. There is NO problem with running with a tip from a reliable source. Being an MSU (that’s Mississippi State) fan I can tell you my heart rate was up and my adrenal glands were pumping… I was friggin’ stoked! BUT I will admit that the announcement from Petersen burst my balloon (so to speak)… I over reacted as did the BSU fans but my ‘over’ reaction was out of joy and hope… after we have suffered with the offense we have suffered with for the past 5-7 yrs… this was a breath of fresh air. I liked Coach Croom and he was a man of great character but he was too stubborn about some things and that led to his ‘resigning’ I will miss him but not his offensive philosophy or play calling. But as excited as I got about Coach Petersen, I can just imagine the gaping hole in the pit of any BSU fan when this news hit the ‘wire’ OMGsh that would have been devestating to me as a BSU fan. We have had several key recruits in basketball defect from their signing and jump the NBA over the past 10 yrs… 2 are starting in the NBA Travis Outlaw and Monte Ellis (after he gets off his suspension) and the 3rd was Jonathan Bender of the Pacers. And then we had the whole Scotty Hopson debacle of a recruitment where he committed and was going to sign… but then wanted to wait and ultimately backed off his committment to sign with UT… a little shady if you ask me, but no proof of anything. I say that to say this, I can empathize with the BSU fans to some extent b/c of these sudden ripping disappointments as would be the departure of Coach Petersen…and of course EVERYONE hates to lose to Mississippi… “Why would ANYONE want to move to Mississippi?” many would say, but we have heard that kind of talk before! I just wanted to say as an MSU fan, I thought what you did was fine, and now you can say that a fan in Mississippi (actually live in Lousiana) contaced you. God bless!
